Ultrasonic Inspections

Ultrasonic testing is a sensitive, convenient and versatile nondestructive method. It can assess the integrity of a component through different stages of production, fabrication, transportation, and degradation in service.

Ultrasonic testing provides real-time information on porosity, structure and elastic constants. Macroscopic and hidden, minute discontinuities, such as voids, cracks, inclusions, and weld defects, can be detected; accurate measurements of depth/thickness ca be performed in thin and thick components alike in castings, pipes, submarine hulls. This technique is also applicable in corrosion and metallurgical studies, measurement of elastic moduli and assessment of weld integrity, among others.

An ultrasonic wave directed into a solid body can be used to measure its material properties and property changes as the beam of attenuated ultrasonic energy transmitted through it, or the energy reflected from flaws, is measured. A variety of standard methods are available for ultrasonic measurements, including electromagnetic acoustic transducer techniques, pulse-echo straight-beam examination by the contact methods, and angle-beam exanimation by the contact method.

Flaw detection and depth/thickness measurements are performed in-house and on-site at Bess MTI’s by highly experienced inspectors using state-of-the-art equipment. Our instrumentation consists of the following:

  • 2 P anametric Metal Thickness Gauges
  • 1 Nortec Scope
  • 1 Stavely Scope
  • 2 Branson 303 Flaw Detection Devices
  • Plus Transducers, Step Wedges, etc.
