Charpy Impact Testing

Bess MTI provides Charpy Impact testing services to its clients. This is a quality test that evaluates the notch sensitivity and impact toughness of metals, polymers, ceramics and composites.

The Charpy Impact test measures the energy absorbed by the fracture of a notched specimen under the impact of a heavy pendulum, falling through a fixed distance to strike the specimen at a fixed velocity. Tough materials absorb a lot of energy when fractured, while brittle materials absorb little energy.

The impact energy measured by the Charpy Impact test is the work done to fracture the specimen. The specimen deforms elastically until the yield point is reached and a plastic zone develops at the notch. As the test specimen continues to be deformed, the plastic zone work hardens. This resulting increase in stress and strain leads to specimen fractures.
